Becoming one in Christ

40 Days of Prayer

Day 25

Mom Broke Up A Fight With A Song

Clint Calvert, Church Leadership Catalyst, MWBC

"Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts." Colossians 3:16 (CSB)

How can we use music to bring to mind of God's word in dealing with one another? My memory takes me to the frequent scuffles that brothers born only a year apart can experience. My brother and I got into fights and, as we grew older, the fights escalated in intensity and property damage.

My mother's response to this? She would start singing the scripture song,"Beloved, Let Us Love One Another," with lyrics from the King James Version of John 4:7-8.

There is nothing more annoying than Mom breaking up a fight by getting between fighting siblings to sing. Her presence and the convicting power of that song were enough to calm the shenanigans.

I wish you could hear her sing:"Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and everyone who loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knowth not God for God is love. Beloved, let us love one another. First John four seven and eight."

PRAYER: Father, thank you for the power of your Word and the vehicle of music. Help us hear the melody that reminds us of your truth. We are looking forward to that day when we will sing songs to You in Your presence forever. In Jesus Name, amen.
